Arun Subramanian becomes first Ind-American to lead Manhattan Federal District Court

Attorney Arun Subramanian was appointed as the first Indian American to the Manhattan Federal District Court of New York. The Senate Judiciary Committee announced on Twitter that Subramanian has been directly involved in every aspect of civil litigation and has clerked at every level of the federal judiciary.

“Arun Subramanian to the Southern District of New York. He’s been directly engaged in every aspect of civil litigation and has clerked at every level of the federal judiciary. He is also the first South Asian judge to serve on this bench,” Committe tweeted.

Previously, in September 2022, US President Joe Biden announced Subramanian’s appointment to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

According to an official White House statement, President Biden’s announcement brings the total number of announced federal judicial nominees to 143. This is Biden’s twenty-sixth round of judicial nominees and his thirteenth schedule of nominations in 2022.

Subramanian earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2004 and his BA from Case Western Reserve University in 2001, according to the statement. He has been a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP in New York since 2007.

Arun has successfully redeemed over a billion dollars for public and private entities that have been victims of fraud and other illegal activity during his career. Furthermore, from 2006 to 2007, Arun Subramanian worked as a law clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the United States Supreme Court.

According to Susman Godfrey’s official website, Lynch served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York from 2005 to 2006, and Judge Dennis Jacobs served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2004 to 2005.

The Indian-origin attorney has advocated for public entities in False Claims Act cases, victims of child pornography trafficking, consumers, and individuals who have been harmed unfairly.

Notably, Arun gives back to the legal community by taking on pro bono cases outside of the courtroom, and he has served on the pro bono panel for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit for many years.

According to Susman Godfrey’s official website, Arun Subramanian currently serves as Chairperson of Susman Godfrey’s 2022 Pro Bono Committee and is also a longtime Director of the Columbia Law Review, one of the Nation’s preeminent legal journals.
