Assam, Arunachal sign agreement on border dispute in presence of Amit Shah

The governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) here in the national capital on Thursday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to resolve a long-standing border dispute along the borders of both northeastern states.

The MoU was signed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Prema Khandu. Speaking on the occasion, Amit Shah said, “The signing of an agreement for the settlement of an inter-state boundary dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh is a very big achievement. Today, we have crossed the milestone for the establishment of a developed, peaceful and conflict-free northeast.”

The Assam cabinet approved the recommendations of 12 Regional Committees formed by the state government to resolve the decades-long border dispute with Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Earlier in March 2022, the governments of Assam and Meghalaya signed a historic agreement here in the national capital to resolve their 50-year-old border dispute.

The agreement was signed between Assam and Meghalaya two months after the chief ministers of the two states submitted a draught resolution to Amit Shah on January 31 for examination and consideration by the MHA.

The governments of Assam and Meghalaya had proposed a draught resolution to settle their border disputes in six of the twelve “areas of difference” along the border.
