Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held discussions on Sunday evening at the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) headquarters in Ambari, Guwahati, with leaders and workers of the AGP, a key ally of the NDA and part of the BJP-led Assam government, to strategize for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
In the forthcoming elections, the AGP is set to contest in two seats (Barpeta and Dhubri), while the BJP will contest in 11 seats and UPPL in one seat (Kokrajhar).
Addressing the media regarding the upcoming polls, Chief Minister Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP and its alliance partners securing victory by significant margins.
“We anticipate winning by a substantial margin in various constituencies: Jorhat by 2-2.5 lakh votes, Barpeta by 2.5-3 lakh votes, Kokrajhar by 2.5 lakh votes, Dibrugarh by 3 lakh votes, Guwahati by 5-5.5 lakh votes, Nagaon by 50,000-70,000 votes, and Sonitpur by 3 lakh votes. A competitive contest is expected in the Nagaon and Karimganj seats,” stated Sarma during a rally.
He also hinted at potential party expansions, suggesting that before the state assembly polls, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah might join the BJP. Additionally, he mentioned the possibility of Congress MLA Bharat Narah’s defection to the BJP.
The Chief Minister also addressed concerns related to the indigenous people of Assam.
The Lok Sabha elections for the 14 constituencies of Assam are scheduled to be conducted in three phases, with polling dates set for April 19, April 26, and May 7.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 7 out of the 14 seats in Assam. In the subsequent 2019 elections, the BJP increased its seat count to 9, while the Congress maintained its three seats, and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won a single seat.
