Assam: Poachers kill rhino for its horn in Kaziranga National Park

Poachers killed and stole the horn of a one-horned rhinoceros in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve ahead of President Droupadi Murmu’s visit. This is the first case of rhino poaching in Kaziranga Park this year. The last poaching incident in the national park occurred in December 2021.

According to park officials, on Sunday evening, forest staff discovered a dehorned rhino carcass inside the park area near Kathpara forest camp under the Bagori range office.

According to Jatindra Sarma, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, the incident occurred in a remote area. The park’s forest staff discovered the dehorned carcass in an area near Kathpara forest camp within the park, he said.

“We suspect that the rhino was killed by poachers a few days back. One live cartridge was found near the spot,” Jatindra Sarma said. He stated that it was an unfortunate incident that we were not expecting.
