Maharashtra is gearing up for a high-stakes electoral battle as all 288 assembly constituencies go to polls in a single phase on November 20, 2024. Voting will take place from 7 am to 6 pm, and a dry day will be observed across the state on election day.
The election is a contest between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Mahayuti coalition comprises the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, while the MVA features the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction.
Exit poll predictions will be broadcast after voting concludes at 6:30 pm on November 20, adhering to the Election Commission’s guidelines. Votes will be counted on November 23, 2024, with results expected later that day.
The election campaign concluded on November 18, with both alliances heavily promoting their agendas. The BJP-led Mahayuti emphasized welfare schemes like ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin’ for women, while the opposition MVA focused on social justice, caste-based census, and constitutional protection. The BJP also launched advertisements targeting the MVA, referencing events like the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the Palghar lynching.
Polarizing slogans and sharp accusations marked the campaign, with the BJP’s “Batenge toh katenge” slogan drawing criticism from the MVA for allegedly dividing voters along religious lines.

The number of voters in Maharashtra has increased to 96.37 million, up from 89.4 million in 2019, due to special enrolment drives. The state has over 2 million first-time voters aged 18-19 and 47,716 centenarians. To accommodate the growing electorate, the number of polling booths has also risen to 100,186, compared to 96,654 in 2019.
Strict enforcement of the election code of conduct has led to the seizure of over ₹660 crore worth of illegal cash, liquor, drugs, and freebies in Maharashtra. Over 4,000 complaints of poll code violations were registered, with many addressed through the Election Commission’s C-Vigil app.
Since the last elections in 2019, Maharashtra’s political scene has witnessed significant upheavals, including splits within the Shiv Sena and NCP. The Mahayuti government is led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde with Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis. The election will test the strength of these new alliances and reshape Maharashtra’s political future.
The stage is set for an intense electoral battle, with results to reveal whether the Mahayuti retains power or the MVA makes a comeback.

On Wednesday, the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the Chhattisgarh premises of Gaurav Mehta, who is allegedly linked to a bitcoin transaction case in Maharashtra.
The case originates from FIRs filed in Maharashtra and Delhi.
Sources revealed that the ED is investigating Mehta’s involvement, along with others, in a scheme that allegedly collected substantial sums of money—estimated to be ₹6,600 crore in bitcoins (in 2017)—from the public by making false promises of 10 percent monthly returns in the form of bitcoins.

“No one was aware of my visit to Nala Sopara. When I called BJP candidate Rajan Naik, he invited me to join the workers for tea. I went there. There was no conspiracy or ill intent. The opposition is using this incident to their advantage because they are losing,” Tawde explained.

In a press conference on Wednesday, BJP MP Sambit Patra accused Supriya Sule and Nana Patole of acting under the guidance of “big players” Rahul and Sonia Gandhi in relation to allegations that they used illegal Bitcoin funds to manipulate elections.
When asked about Supriya Sule filing a defamation notice and denying the accusations, Patra responded, “Is there any thief in the world who, when caught, admits to the crime? The one who is caught always claims innocence. Naturally, such a significant theft has taken place.”

On the alleged ‘cash for vote’ controversy involving BJP’s Vinod Tawde and the audio clips of NCP-SCP’s Supriya Sule and Congress’ Nana Patole, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis stated, “Regarding Vinod Tawde, I clarified yesterday that neither did he distribute any money nor was any money found with him. This was a deliberate attempt to create controversy, using a particular ecosystem. As for the allegations against Supriya Sule and Nana Patole, the accusations made by a former IPS officer and the release of certain clips are very serious. This matter requires thorough investigation. The truth must come out. These are grave allegations, and it is crucial that this be fully investigated and a fair report be presented to the public. The voice in the clips appears to be similar to Supriya Sule’s, but we must be fair and allow clarity. If the voice has been doctored, AI can help identify that, and we hope it is done quickly. This is not merely an election issue; it concerns national security.”
Fadnavis also urged citizens to vote, saying, “We are witnessing the biggest festival of democracy. I have cast my vote along with my family, and I urge everyone to vote in large numbers. Voting is not only our right, but our responsibility. In a democracy, we elect the government and hold certain expectations from them, so voting is of utmost importance.”
Maharashtra Congress President and Sakoli candidate Nana Patole responded to allegations against him and Supriya Sule, stating, “Everyone knows my voice, and PM Modi knows it well. The BJP has resorted to such tactics out of fear of losing. Just yesterday, Vinod Tawde was caught distributing money, and liquor was found in the storehouse of Devendra Fadnavis’ personal assistant. These individuals want to bring ‘vote jihad’ and ‘liquor jihad’ to Maharashtra. We have already issued a defamation notice and filed an FIR. Our legal team will handle this matter, and once our government is in place, we will teach this dishonest BJP a lesson in a very systematic manner.”
