Who Was Bibek Debroy? Chairman Of PM Modi’s Economic Advisory Council Passes Away At 69

Bibek Debroy, a distinguished Indian economist and the chief of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM), passed away on Friday at the age of 69. Debroy was celebrated for his extensive contributions to India’s policymaking landscape and his scholarly work in Indology, leaving a significant impact on both academia and public policy.

A Foundation Built on Academic Excellence

Debroy’s academic journey began at the Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, West Bengal, where he developed a passion for learning. He furthered his education at prestigious institutions, including Presidency College in Kolkata, the Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge. His rigorous training laid the groundwork for a career dedicated to the economic advancement of India.

Over the years, Dr. Debroy held several influential positions in various educational and research institutions. He served at Presidency College, Kolkata, before moving to the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune. His tenure at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and the National Council of Applied Economic Research further showcased his commitment to economic research and education.

Dr. Debroy was also a member of the NITI Aayog, India’s premier policy think tank, until June 5, 2019, where he played a vital role in shaping economic policies and strategies.

In recognition of his immense contributions to literature and education, Debroy was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015, one of India’s highest civilian honors. This accolade reflected his commitment to enhancing the academic landscape and his influence as a thought leader in economics.

A Prolific Author and Translator

Bibek Debroy’s literary contributions were extensive. He authored numerous books and articles on various aspects of economics, showcasing his ability to communicate complex ideas in an accessible manner. Additionally, he was instrumental in translating ancient Indian texts into English, including revered works such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas. These translations helped make India’s rich cultural heritage more accessible to a broader audience.

Recent Role and Controversy

In July 2024, Debroy was appointed as the chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, further solidifying his role as a leader in the academic community. However, he resigned from this position in September amid controversies surrounding the termination of the institute’s vice-chancellor, Dr. Ajit Ranade.
