Bill passed by Rajya Sabha enslaves the people of Delhi, black day for Indian democracy: CM Arvind Kejriwal

Bill passed by Rajya Sabha enslaves the people of Delhi, black day for Indian democracy: CM Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on central government upon the passing of Delhi Ordinance Bill in Rajya Sabha. Arvind Kejriwal termed it as a black day in the history of Indian democracy and said the bill tantamounts to enslaving the people of Delhi. Drawing a parallel with the Government of India Act of 1935, which was then imposed by the Britishers on Indians, the Chief Minister said, “After 75 years of Independence, the Prime Minister has curtailed the freedom of the people of Delhi, almost as if their votes don’t matter, because their elected government has been rendered almost powerless.”

He further stated that the Prime Minister has willingly ignored the orders of Supreme Court which held in its order that India is a democratic nation and voters elect a government so that they can exercise discretionary powers on their behalf. But the Prime Minister has ignored this most fundamental tenet of our democracy and violated the orders of the SC by passing the Delhi Ordinance Bill. Cm Arvind Kejriwal said that the LG and PM Modi wish to run the government by themselves, rather than abiding by the orders of Supreme Court.

Upon passing the Delhi Ordinance Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Delhi CM and National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, Arvind Kejriwal criticized the Central Government. He said, “This day has been a black day in the history of Indian democracy, this Bill makes the people of Delhi helpless, obligated and dependent. Before our independence, Britishers passed the Government of India Act, 1935 in which they wrote that elections would take place in India but the elected government would not have any powers to function. After 75 years of independence, PM Modi has snatched the freedom of the people of Delhi, the PM has made the provisions of Britishers’ 1935 Act in which elections would take place in Delhi but the elected government would not have any discretionary powers to function. This act has been passed by our Parliament , there’s no value left in the vote of Delhi’s people.”
