The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to swiftly act against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and provisions of the Representation of People Act, 1951 before the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections.
According to former BJP law cell convener, Pankaj Wadhwani has formally lodged a complaint against Priyanka Gandhi for revealing the Student Scholarship scheme in Mandla, claiming that it violates the Model Code of Conduct.
Wadhwani’s complaint to the Election Commission highlighted that Gandhi’s announcement was aimed at luring voters. He emphasized that during her public address in Mandla district on October 12, Gandhi made a tempting offer of Rs 500 to Rs 1500 per month for every student from class 1 to 12, without a concrete plan, solely to influence the voting.
Wadhwani, in an official statement, explained, “After the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, on October 12, Priyanka Gandhi held a meeting in Mandla, Madhya Pradesh in which she announced to give Rs 500 to 1500 for the education of children. This announcement is a direct inducement to the voters and a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Along with this, it is also a violation of the Madhya Pradesh Representation Act. The complaint regarding this matter was sent to the Election Commission at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi. Taking cognizance of the complaint, the investigation has been initiated.”
Madhya Pradesh is set for assembly polls on November 17, with the state electing legislators from 230 Assembly constituencies. The election will be held in one phase, and the counting will take place on December 3.
It’s worth noting that Priyanka Gandhi, the AICC national general secretary of the Congress, declared a scholarship scheme for school students in Madhya Pradesh worth Rs 648.80 crore on Thursday. As per the scheme, students from classes 1-8 would receive Rs 500, while students from classes 9 and 10 would get Rs 1000, and students from classes 11 and 12 would receive Rs 1500.
