BJP govt in Karnataka will prioritize conserving places blessed by nature: Amit Shah

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code in its manifesto for the Karnataka Assembly elections on May 10, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday that his party would prioritise the promotion and conservation of natural places in the state.

Soon after the BJP’s vision document was unveiled in the presence of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his predecessor and Lingayat stalwart BS Yediyurappa, Shah made the promise via his Twitter account, where he also shared a video showing the natural beauty of a place in Karnataka’s Coorg.

“The natural beauty of Coorg is truly stunning. Its emerald-green forests and stunning landscapes are sights to behold. The BJP government in Karnataka will prioritize promoting and conserving such places blessed by nature,” Shah tweeted.

On the same day, Shah addressed a roadshow in Tiptur Assembly in poll-bound Karnataka’s Tumkuru, where the BJP’s manifesto will play a crucial role.

The BJP’s 16-point election manifesto, which was issued on Monday, included the implementation of UCC in Karnataka based on the recommendations of a high-level committee that will be formed for the purpose. It also vowed to deliver three free cooking gas cylinders to all low-income families every year.

Furthermore, the manifesto calls for the establishment of an ‘Atal Aahara Kendra’ in each ward of each municipal corporation to provide affordable, high-quality, and healthy food throughout the state.

Launch of the ‘Poshana’ scheme, under which every BPL household will receive half a liter of Nandini milk every day, as well as 5 kg of Shri Anna – Siri dhanya through monthly ration kits; introduction of the National Register of Citizens and “rapid deportation of all illegal migrants”; development of Bengaluru for the next generation by designating it as the ‘State Capital Region,’ and executing a comprehensive, technology-led city development program – centred around Ease of Life, cohesive transportation networks and enabling ecosystems for making Bengaluru a Global Hub of Digital Innovation are among other promises made in the BJP manifesto.

Considered a triangular struggle between the BJP, Congress, and the JDS, all parties are working hard and leaving no stone untouched, while certain political leaders have hurled insults.

The Congress Party has been a major force in Karnataka politics, forming governments multiple times in the state. In 2008, the party suffered a catastrophic defeat, obtaining only 80 of the 224 assembly seats. However, in 2013, it recovered and won a majority of 122 seats. It gained 80 seats in the previous election and established a coalition government with the JD(S) that disintegrated in 2019. It is currently the main opposition party in the state.

The Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023 are set for May 10, with vote counting taking place on May 13. The 224-member Assembly will be elected in the election. This time, the ruling BJP and Congress are anticipated to compete closely, with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) acting as a possible kingmaker.
