Bombay HC grants relief to Uddhav Thackeray in disproportionate assets case

In an alleged disproportionate assets case, the Bombay High Court granted relief to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his family on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into Thackeray and his family’s alleged disproportionate assets. While dismissing the PIL, the HC fined petitioner Gauri Bhide Rs 25,000.

The division bench of Justices Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Valmiki Menezes reserved its decision in Gouri Bhide’s plea in December last year.

The Maharashtra government informed the High Court in December that the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) had launched a preliminary investigation into the complaint.

The Thackeray family opposed the PIL and requested that it be dismissed, claiming that such orders could not be issued because the petition lacked facts and sought to circumvent due process of law.
