Can One Vote From A Different State? Biggest Challenge For Migrant Voters

As the nation gears up for the upcoming mammoth election starting April 19, it’s crucial to confront a stark reality: a staggering 30 crore eligible voters abstained from participating in the 2019 General Elections, with a significant contribution from migrant populations.

But why?

One major factor is the challenge of travel and the scarcity of available office leaves, leaving many individuals opting out of exercising their voting rights.

Consider this scenario: Picture an IT professional hailing from Bihar, diligently working in Bengaluru, equipped with a voter ID registered in Bihar. Where does this individual go to cast their ballot? The answer inevitably leads back to their hometown in Bihar.

Faced with this dilemma, the voter is presented with two choices: embark on the journey back home to cast their vote or reluctantly abstain from participating in the electoral process altogether.

As the nation braces for this monumental event, it’s imperative to address these logistical hurdles that hinder widespread voter participation and to explore innovative solutions to ensure every eligible citizen can exercise their democratic right with ease.

Well, here’s the twist.

Individuals can register themselves in the constituency where they have relocated. It’s evident that someone residing in Bengaluru cannot vote for Bihar. Therefore, if you live in Bengaluru, you must enroll in the constituency within Bengaluru. Fortunately, there’s a solution: Form 6.

You can either complete Form 6 online via the Election Commission of India’s website or visit the office of the electoral registration officer. In either case, you’ll need to provide proof of address, such as:

– Passport

– Driver’s License

– Bank Passbook

– Ration Card

– Income Tax Assessment Order

– Rental Agreement

– Utility Bills (Water, Telephone, Electricity, Gas)

Once the Election Commission receives Form 6, a booth officer will visit your residence to verify your details and obtain your signature on the application form.

After verification, your name will be added to the electoral rolls within a week.

If a student wishes to vote, they must submit a certificate from the head of their institution.
