In a major infra push, the Union Cabinet Friday cleared the 26.463-km-long Rithala-Kundli corridor as part of Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV expansion. The project that has been aimed at increasing connectivity between Delhi and Haryana has a total of 21 elevated stations to be constructed. The entire thing is expected to get completed in four years’ time. The decision came post a Cabinet meeting that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said this expansion would make Delhi Metro one of the three biggest metro networks in the world. The project, costing an estimated ₹6,230 crore, will take the existing Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda)-Rithala corridor further up, opening up areas such as Narela, Bawana, and portions of Rohini in northwest Delhi.
Rithala, Rohini Sectors 25 to 36, Barwala, Bawana Industrial Area, Narela DDA Sports Complex, Kundli, and so on are some of the key stations on this corridor. This will be the fourth extension of Delhi Metro into Haryana. It will supplement the lines already existing from Gurugram, Ballabhgarh, and Bahadurgarh.
The government emphasized that more than 56% of Phase-IV construction has already been completed. Phase-IV construction includes 65.202 km and 45 stations, while the three priority corridors will be operational by March 2026. Two additional corridors covering 20.762 km are in pre-tendering stages.
Today, the Delhi Metro operates over 12 lines across 392 kilometers of routes and 288 stations. This sees an average of 64 lakh daily passenger journeys, while on November 18, 2024, it recorded its highest-ever usage at 78.67 lakh journeys. It will further strengthen urban mobility as it supports the increasing demands of the National Capital Region.
