The Centre has called for a special session of Parliament to take place from September 18 to September 22, as announced by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, on Thursday.
Joshi stated, “The Special Session of Parliament, which marks the 13th session of the 17th Lok Sabha and the 261st session of the Rajya Sabha, is scheduled to occur from September 18th to 22nd. This session will consist of five sittings. During the auspicious Amrit Kaal, we are anticipating meaningful discussions and debates within the Parliament,” Joshi mentioned on X platform.
The official agenda for the five-day session has not been disclosed yet. This session is set to occur shortly after the G20 Summit in the national capital on September 9 and 10.
The Monsoon session of Parliament, which commenced on July 20, concluded on August 11.
During the recent Monsoon Session, the Lok Sabha successfully passed 22 bills, while the Rajya Sabha approved 25 bills. A total of 23 bills were granted approval in both Houses, thus becoming enacted laws. Notably, some bills that were approved by one House in prior sessions also received approval from the other House. The productivity of the Lok Sabha for this session was 45%, while that of the Rajya Sabha was 63%. Among the significant legislative achievements in this session were the amendments to the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Bill, the Cinematograph Amendment Bill, the Forest Conservation Amendment Bill, the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Amendment Bill.
Similar to the Monsoon Session preceding the general elections in 2019, both Prime Minister Modi and the BJP leveraged the debate on the no-confidence motion to showcase their accomplishments, criticize the Opposition, and make their case to the electorate for the upcoming general elections. The deliberations on the no-confidence motion, initiated by Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the House from the Congress party, extended for almost 20 hours and involved the participation of 60 MPs.
