The Vishwakarma Yojana, a nationwide initiative aimed at empowering traditional craftsmen and artisans, is set to launch on September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. This program, which was unveiled by PM Modi during his Independence Day address at the Red Fort, will commence simultaneously in 70 locations across the country.

The scheme’s primary objective is to benefit individuals skilled in traditional craftsmanship, and it will be inaugurated by central ministers in all states and union territories. The nationwide launch will see the participation of 70 ministers.

Over the next five years, the Vishwakarma Yojana is expected to incur an expenditure of Rs 13,000 crores and is aimed at improving the welfare of grassroots-level workers.

During the inauguration events of the Vishwakarma scheme, prominent Union Ministers will be present in various locations across the country. For instance, Home Minister Amit Shah will attend in Ahmedabad, Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur, Anurag Thakur in Shimla, Hardeep Singh Puri in Amritsar, Mahendra Nath Pandey in Varanasi, Smriti Irani in Jhansi, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Chennai, Bhupender Yadav in Jaipur, and Narendra Singh Tomar in Bhopal, among others.

Under the Vishwakarma Yojana, skilled workers such as cobblers, washermen, and carpenters will have access to loans of Rs one lakh at a five percent interest rate in the initial phase and Rs two lakh in the second phase. Additionally, the program will offer training opportunities to artisans and laborers, along with a daily stipend of Rs 500 for trainees.

This comprehensive scheme encompasses 18 different categories of work, benefiting various segments of the workforce, and is considered a significant initiative, particularly in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
