Navigating the G20 Summit: Check the Routes, Traffic Advisory Before Heading Out in New Delhi

As New Delhi gears up to host the prestigious G20 Summit, local authorities have issued a comprehensive advisory outlining the road regulations and traffic management strategies that will be in place to ensure the smooth execution of the event. The advisory, which includes guidelines on open and closed routes, aims to streamline the movement of essential commodities, passengers, and vehicles while minimizing disruption to residents and commuters.

Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi had issued an apology in light of the impending traffic changes set to take effect due to the G20 Summit, scheduled to transpire on September 9-10 at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. Recognizing the forthcoming inconvenience, he underscored the augmented responsibility of Delhi’s residents in accommodating this international event. Modi conveyed regret over the upcoming disruptions and modifications in traffic flow, while emphasizing the essential nature of the arrangements.

The esteemed Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre will serve as the venue for the summit, featuring state-of-the-art facilities. PM Modi’s remarks reflected his anticipation of the anticipated inconveniences, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to ensuring the success of the forthcoming G20 gathering.

The advisory, released by the New Delhi District Administration, lays out the following key points:

1. Essential Commodities Entry: Vehicles transporting essential commodities such as milk, vegetables, fruits, and medical supplies, possessing valid ‘No Entry Permissions,’ will be permitted to enter New Delhi.
2. Interstate Buses: Interstate buses will be allowed entry into New Delhi, with their routes terminating at designated points along the Ring Road.
3. Ring Road Usage: Buses already within New Delhi will be limited to operating on the Ring Road and the road network beyond the Ring Road, heading towards the borders of the city. These buses will be permitted to exit from Delhi.
4. General Traffic: General traffic, including commercial vehicles and buses already present within the city, will be permitted to use the Ring Road and road networks extending beyond it towards the city borders.
5. TSRs and Taxis: Auto-rickshaws (TSRs) and taxis will be allowed to ply on road networks outside the New Delhi District. However, taxis carrying bona fide residents and tourists with valid hotel bookings within the district will be allowed to ply within the district’s road network. Proof of identity will be required for access.
6. Passenger Movement: Movement to and from the airport, New Delhi, and Old Delhi Railway Stations will be facilitated. Passengers are advised to follow suggested routes and allocate sufficient travel time.
7. Traffic Regulation: Traffic entering New Delhi District will be regulated, with certain entry points potentially restricted.
8. Resident and Authorized Vehicles: Bonafide residents and authorized vehicles will be permitted to move within the New Delhi District. Vehicles providing services to hotels, hospitals, and other important facilities in the district will also be allowed after verification. Relevant documentation will be required for verification.
9. Traffic Entry Points: General traffic, excluding goods vehicles and buses, will be allowed to enter Delhi via the Rajokari Border. However, such traffic will be diverted from NH-48 to Rao Tula Ram Marg – Olof Palme Marg. No movement will be allowed on NH-48 towards Dhaula Kuan.
10. Restricted Routes: Several routes will be designated as off-limits to all types of goods vehicles, commercial vehicles, interstate buses, and local city buses during specific hours. This includes Mathura Road (beyond Ashram Chowk), Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road, and inside the Pragati Maidan Tunnel during the period from 0000 hours on September 8, 2023, to 2359 hours on September 10, 2023.
11. Controlled Zone: The entirety of New Delhi District will be considered as “Controlled Zone-I” from 0500 hours on September 8, 2023, to 2359 hours on September 10, 2023.

Metro Services

Metro Rail service will continue to operate for passengers at all metro stations. Nevertheless, entry or exit at the Supreme Court Metro Station will be disallowed 5:00 am on 09.09.2023 until 11:00 pm on 10.09.2023.

Autorickshaws and Taxis

Between 5:00 am on 09.09.2023 and 12:00 am on 10.09.2023, there will be a restriction on the entry and movement of Autorickshaws and Taxis within the New Delhi District. Nevertheless, Taxis transporting authorized residents and tourists with confirmed hotel reservations within the confines of the New Delhi District will be granted permission to travel on the road network within the district.

Routes Suggested By Delhi Police

North-South Corridor:

• Utilize the Ring Road route via Ashram Chowk, Sarai Kale Khan, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Noida Link Road, Pusta Road, Yudhistir Setu, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Ring Road, and onwards to Majnu Ka Tila.
• Alternatively, starting from AIIMS Chowk, proceed along the Ring Road, pass Dhaula Kuan, continue along the Ring Road, reach Brar Square, cross the Naraina Flyover, and proceed to Rajouri Garden Junction, then follow the Ring Road to Punjabi Bagh Junction, and finally continue via Ring Road to Azad Pur Chowk.

East-West Corridor:

• For those coming from Sun Dial/DND Flyover, travel along the Ring Road, pass through Ashram Chowk, go through the Moolchand Underpass, reach AIIMS Chowk, continue along the Ring Road, pass Dhaula Kuan, reach Brar Square, and use the Naraina Flyover.
• Alternatively, if approaching from Yudhisthir Setu, follow the Ring Road route, passing through Chandgi Ram Akhara and Mall Road, and reach Azad Pur Chowk before continuing along Lala Jagat Narayan Marg.

For New Delhi Railway Station

On 10.09.2023 from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm, there will be disruptions to the road route leading to New Delhi Railway Station from the Ajmeri Gate direction. Passengers are advised to utilize Metro services if possible. For those opting for road travel, consider the following routes based on your location:

For travelers from South & West Delhi: Take the route: Dhaula Kuan – Ring Road – Naraina Flyover – Mayapuri Chowk – Kirti Nagar Main Road – Shadipur Flyover – Patel Road (Main Mathura Marg) – R/A Pusa – Pusa Road – Dayal Chowk – Panchkuian Road – Outer Circle Connaught Place – Chelmsford Road for Paharganj side, or Minto Road – Bhavbhuti Marg for Ajmeri Gate side.

For passengers from North & East Delhi: Opt for the route: Yudhisthir Setu – Boulevard Road – Rani Jhansi Flyover – R/A Jhandewalan – D.B. Gupta Road – Sheela Cinema Road – Paharganj Bridge to access New Delhi Railway Station.

For Old Delhi Railway Station

On 10.09.2023, road travel towards Old Delhi Railway Station from the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (SPM) Road side will be impacted between 0500 hrs. and 1300 hrs. Passengers are advised to maximize their use of Metro services. If road travel is necessary, consider the following routes based on your location:

For travelers from South & East Delhi: Follow the route: Ring Road – Ashram Chowk – Sarai Kale Khan – Delhi-Meerut Expressway – Noida Link Road – Pusta Road – Yudhister Setu – ISBT Kashmere Gate – Lothian Road – Chhatta Rail – S.P. Mukherjee Marg – Kauria Bridge to reach Old Delhi Railway Station.

For passengers from West & North Delhi: Take the route: Punjabi Bagh Junction – Rohtak Road – Rani Jhansi Flyover – Lothian Road – Chatta Rail – Kauria Bridge for access to Old Delhi Railway Station.

For Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station

• From South Delhi: Take the path: Dhaula Kuan Flyover – Ring Road – AIIMS Chowk – Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Setu – Slip Road towards Lala Lajpat Rai Marg – Lodhi Road – Neela Gumbad – Hazrat Nizamuddin Marg – Nizamuddin Railway Station Road to reach Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station.
• From East Delhi: Opt for the route: Pusta Road/Noida Link Road – Delhi-Meerut Expressway – Mahatma Gandhi Marg (Ring Road) – Nizamuddin Entry-II Road to access Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station.

• From South Delhi: Take the route: Dhaula Kuan Flyover – Vande Matram Marg – Dayal Chowk – Faiz Road – New Rohtak Road – Liberty Cinema – Navhind School Marg – Sarai Rohilla Railway Station Road to arrive at Sarai Rohilla Railway Station.

For passengers embarking from various parts of Delhi, the following Metro routes are suggested to reach the airport with ease:

• Dwarka to T3: Utilize the Blue Line to Dwarka Sector 21 Station followed by the Airport Express Line to IGI Airport Terminal 3.
• New Delhi to T3: Opt for the Yellow Line to New Delhi Station, then the Airport Express Line to IGI Airport Terminal 3. Alternatively, you can take the Orange Line from Shivaji Stadium to IGI Airport Terminal 3.
• South Delhi to T3: Take the Pink Line to Dhaula Kuan Station and then the Airport Express Line to IGI Airport Terminal 3. please be informed that road journeys to IGI Airport will experience disruptions from 12:00 AM (midnight) on the night of September 7th to 11:59 pm on September 10th, 2023. For those opting for road travel to the airport during this period, it’s essential to plan your trip wisely and consider the following recommended routes:

• From Gurugram to Terminal 3 (T3): Take the route: NH-48 – Rao Gajraj Singh Marg – Old Delhi Gurugram Road – UER II – Service Road NH-48 – T3 Terminal Road.
• From Gurugram to Terminal 1 (T1): Follow the path: NH-48 – Rao Gajraj Singh Marg – Old Delhi Gurugram Road – UER II – Service Road NH-48 – T3 Terminal Road – Service Road NH-48 – Sanjay T-Point – Ullan Batar Marg – Terminal T1.
• From Dwarka to T3: Opt for the route: Sector 22 Dwarka Road – UER II – Service Road NH-48 – T3 Terminal Road.

City Bus Services

City buses are set to run along Ring Road and the road network extending beyond Ring Road towards the outskirts of Delhi. These buses will be permitted to exit the city. However, there will be no city bus service available within the New Delhi Area.
