The declining air quality in Delhi has raised apprehensions regarding the forthcoming World Cup match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The scheduled showdown at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday afternoon is clouded with uncertainties. Some asthmatic players have been forced to forego practice sessions, and with the Central government’s implementation of GRAP 4 restrictions, the smog-laden Delhi atmosphere has emerged as a significant cause for worry. Over the weekend, both teams opted to call off their practice sessions, with several players opting to stay indoors to minimize their exposure to the deteriorating air quality. Simultaneously, there are reports that the ICC (International Cricket Council) has reached out to Delhi-based pulmonologist Randeep Guleria to provide an impartial evaluation of the prevailing circumstances.
“Under Dr Guleria’s guidance, the venue team has been taking mitigating actions throughout the day including the implementation of water sprinklers around the premises and the installation of air purifiers in the dressing rooms and match officials areas. The AQI within the stadium was monitored throughout the day which has reduced to levels considered acceptable by Dr Guleria,” an ICC spokesperson told PTI.
