"People are dying, please visit Manipur...": Chungreng Koren's Emotional Request Goes Viral

Chungreng Koren, a renowned Mixed Martial Arts fighter from Manipur, has captured the attention of social media with his heartfelt plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a video circulating online, Koren passionately urges PM Modi to visit Manipur, a state plagued by violence, and implores for efforts to restore peace.

The emotional appeal, reportedly made during the Matrix Fight Night (MFN) event, portrays Koren’s deep concern for the turmoil engulfing his homeland. Despite the video’s date remaining undisclosed, its resonance on social media platforms underscores the urgency of addressing the ongoing crisis in Manipur.

“This is my humble request. Violence is happening in Manipur. It has been almost a year. People are dying and many people are at relief camps. There is a shortage of food and water at these relief camps. The children are not able to study properly. The future is unclear. Modi ji, please visit Manipur once and restore peace in the state,” Chungreng Koren is purportedly heard speaking at the event.

Sharing the video clip on X (formally Twitter), Youth Congress president Srinivas BV wrote in Hindi, “Here is Chungreng Koren from Manipur. If only the Prime Minister were a part of their family, perhaps today every citizen of Manipur wouldn’t be compelled to cry.”

Chungreng Koren Wins Interim Bantamweight Championship

The Indian Rhino clinched the Interim Bantamweight title with a commanding TKO victory. Demonstrating superiority throughout all four rounds, he solidified his position as a formidable contender to challenge Uloomi Karim for the primary Bantamweight title. Chungreng’s performance solidifies his status as the premier 135-pound fighter in Indian MMA at present.

What’s Happening In Manipur?

Since May of last year, ethnic conflict in Manipur has resulted in the deaths of over 200 individuals and the displacement of nearly 50,000 people. Authorities report that the situation has escalated into a state of anarchy, with underground militant factions gaining renewed backing.

The region has seen a surge in violence following a “Tribal Solidarity March” in the hill districts, which opposed the Meitei community’s push for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The Meiteis, comprising approximately 53% of Manipur’s population and predominantly residing in the Imphal Valley, stand in contrast to the tribal communities, including Nagas and Kukis, who constitute around 40% and primarily inhabit the hill districts.

Recently, there were reports of a serving junior commissioned officer (JCO) of the Indian Army being allegedly abducted by an armed group from Thoubal district in the conflict-ridden Manipur region. The JCO was later rescued after nearly nine hours.
