In line with the trend of name changes in Uttar Pradesh under the Yogi government, the municipal corporation in Ghaziabad passed a proposal with a majority vote on Tuesday to rename the district. Two members opposed the motion during the meeting.
Three proposed names – Gaj Prastha, Doodheshwar Nath Nagar, or Harnandipuram – were finalized and will be submitted to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for consideration. Ghaziabad Mayor Sunita Dayal noted the demand for a name change and stated that the final decision rests with the Chief Minister after discussions with the board.
The head priest of Doodheshwar Nath temple, Mahant Narayan Giri, shared that CM Yogi, during a meeting last month, assured him of considering the request for a name change. Ghaziabad, formerly known as Gaj Prastha, was renamed by Mughal emperor Akbar’s brother-in-law, Ghazuddin.
Mahant Narayan Giri emphasized the importance of shedding names with a colonial legacy, expressing confidence that the city’s glory from the past would be restored under Chief Minister Yogi’s consideration.”
