Parliamentary panel to hear representatives of Civil Aviation Ministry on ‘fixing of airfares’

On Monday, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture will hear from representatives of the Civil Aviation Ministry about the ‘fixing of airfares’. The meeting’s agenda also includes considering and adopting draught reports on ‘Heritage Theft – The Illegal Trade in Indian Antiquities and the Challenges of Retrieving and Safeguarding Our Tangible Cultural Heritage’ and ‘Development of Greenfield and Brownfield Airports and Civil Enclaves in Defence Airports’. The committee meeting to hear Civil Aviation Ministry officials on airfare fixing is scheduled for 3.30 p.m.

The chairman of the Parliamentary Panel on Transport, Tourism, and Culture is senior YSRCP leader V Vijayasai Reddy.

The meeting comes amid reports of a “significant increase” in fares on flights from violence-torn Manipur, even as some airlines temporarily waived some fees, including those for rescheduling flights.
People have complained about a significant increase in the cost of flights between Guwahati and Manipur’s capital, Imphal.

In addition, Go First, a low-cost airline, has filed an application with the National Company Law Tribunal for voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings. According to Go First Airlines, the non-supply of engines by the US-based manufacturer has had an impact on its operations. This has had an effect on airfares in the sectors where the airline operated. Members of the parliamentary panel stated that discussing the issue of airfares is critical.

“It has been seen many times that the airfares rise during summer vacations. Today officials of the aviation ministry have been called and discussion will take place regarding airfares,” a committee member told ANI.
