CM Nitish Hails Bihar’s Caste-based Census, Says It Discloses Economic Conditions of Individuals

RJD Chief Lalu Yadav also hailed the release of the caste survey calling it a "historic" moment.

Following the Bihar government’s release of comprehensive caste survey data, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar commended the entire team responsible for this extensive effort, highlighting that the survey not only delineated caste information but also discloses the economic status of individuals.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, CM Nitish Kumar expressed his appreciation for the team engaged in the caste-based enumeration, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “Today, on the auspicious occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the data of the caste-based census conducted in Bihar has been published. Many congratulations to the entire team engaged in the work of caste-based enumeration!”

He recounted the unanimous passage of the proposal for caste-based enumeration in the Legislature and how it was initiated with the consent of all nine parties in the Bihar Assembly. He emphasized that the state government conducted the caste-based census using its resources, as approved by the Council of Ministers on June 6, 2022.

CM Nitish Kumar further highlighted that the caste-based census not only revealed caste demographics but also provided insights into the economic conditions of individuals. He affirmed that the report would serve as the foundation for subsequent actions aimed at the development and upliftment of all sections of society.

He also announced plans to convene a meeting of the same nine parties of the Bihar Assembly to discuss the survey results and inform them about the findings.

“The government should now ensure that each person has the same share as per their numbers. From the beginning, we have believed that all sections of society should have equitable rights over the resources of the state. When our government is formed at the Center in 2024, we will conduct a caste census in the entire country and oust the Dalit, Muslim, backwards and extremely backward BJP from power,”, he stated.

Meanwhile, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav lauded the caste survey report as the “result of decades of struggle.” He noted that the survey not only provided long-awaited caste data but also furnished concrete references regarding socio-economic statuses.

Tejashwi Yadav stated, “Now the government will quickly ensure the overall development and participation of the deprived sections in the light of these figures.”

He underscored the historical significance of Bihar’s achievements and expressed optimism that the state’s example would resonate throughout the country, shaping the goals of social and economic justice.

The caste survey report, unveiled at a press conference in the state capital, unveiled a plethora of demographic data, including the percentage of various caste groups, religious demographics, and the state’s total population, which exceeds 13 crores.
