During the confidence motion debate in the Haryana Assembly today, Congress MLA Raghuvir Kadian highlighted a seeming contradiction between the Prime Minister’s praise for Manohar Lal Khattar and Khattar’s subsequent resignation. Kadian pointed out that the Prime Minister had visited on March 11 to commend Khattar, yet the very next day, Khattar resigned from his post.
In the assembly session, Kadian remarked that it appeared evident that a political party’s vote bank had been disrupted due to anti-incumbency sentiments. He emphasized the significance of the events, noting that Khattar’s resignation amidst the confidence motion reflected broader instability within the political system. Kadian expressed sympathy for Khattar, acknowledging his integrity in a system rife with corruption, but emphasized that anti-incumbency stemmed from systemic issues rather than individual shortcomings.
Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini presented a confidence motion for his government during the assembly session. With the support of 41 MLAs and backing from 5 independent MLAs alongside HLP MLA Gopal Kanda, the BJP had sufficient numbers to secure passage.
Nayab Singh Saini, who represents Haryana’s Kurukshetra constituency in the Lok Sabha, met Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Tuesday to formally stake claim to form the government, succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar. He subsequently took the oath as Haryana CM in a ceremony at Raj Bhawan, Chandigarh.
Meanwhile, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) directed its MLAs to remain absent during the voting on the confidence motion. The directive came after the collapse of the BJP-JJP alliance and Khattar’s resignation. Khattar speculated that disputes over Lok Sabha poll seat allocation may have contributed to the alliance’s dissolution.
