The landfall process of cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ has commenced and it will continue till midnight, informed Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of Meteorology.
Taking to its official Twitter handle, India Meteorological Department wrote, “Cyclone Warning for Saurashtra & Kutch Coasts: RED MESSAGE.VSCS BIPARJOY at 1730IST today near lat 22.8N and lon 67.9E about 70km WSW of Jakhau Port (Gujarat),130km WNW of Devbhumi Dwarka. LANDFALL PROCESS HAS COMMENCED.”
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired a review meeting at ge State Emergency Operation Center in Gandhinagar on Thursday morning.
The IMD also issued a Red alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts on Wednesday, saying ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ Biparjoy will cross the two coasts adjoining Pakistan coasts, between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau port, by Thursday evening.
The India Meteorological Department also issued extensive warnings about damage to temporary housing structures and falling of trees and branches due to high-speed winds and high tides.
The IMD officials have also asked to suspend all fishing operations as sea conditions will remain disturbed in the northeast Arabian Sea.
