The Rohini District Court in Delhi has postponed the hearing of a civil defamation suit filed by former Delhi Minister Satyender Jain against BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj.
The hearing, originally scheduled for Saturday, was adjourned as the presiding judge, Naina Gupta, was on leave. The matter is now set for hearing on July 14, 2025.
Previously, the court had issued notices to Bansuri Swaraj and other respondents in response to the allegations made by Jain. He claims that Swaraj made ‘defamatory remarks’ against him during a television interview in October 2023. Senior Civil Judge Naina Gupta had issued a notice on December 11, 2024, requiring Swaraj and others to respond to the suit.
Jain is seeking a directive for the TV channel to remove the contentious content and an injunction preventing Swaraj from making further statements. Additionally, he has claimed a symbolic damage amount of one rupee.
The defamation suit was filed through advocate Karan Sharma, who also lodged a separate criminal defamation complaint against Swaraj in Rouse Avenue Court. However, this complaint was dismissed by the court.
According to Jain, Swaraj’s statements during the interview were deliberately made to tarnish his reputation and gain political advantage. He specifically refutes her claims that Rs. 3 crores, 1.8 kg of gold, and 133 gold coins were recovered from his residence during an Enforcement Directorate raid. Jain asserts that these statements were false and intended to mislead the public.
Furthermore, Jain alleges that Swaraj’s remarks were part of a broader “vilification campaign” against him. He claims she publicly labeled him as ‘corrupt’ and a ‘fraud,’ which he believes severely damaged his reputation. He argues that these accusations not only affected his political career but also his personal life, impacting his role as a husband, father, brother, and friend.
Jain contends that the defamatory statements have had a lasting and immeasurable impact on his character and credibility. He maintains that the accusations have tarnished his image as an elected representative and a respected public figure.
According to his complaint, the smear campaign has caused significant harm beyond politics, affecting his standing in society at large.
The case will now be heard in July 2025, and all eyes will be on the court’s decision regarding the alleged defamation and its repercussions.
