Fourteen people, including six women and four children, were admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital after being rescued from a fire that broke out in a four-storey residential building in the Fatehpur Beri area in the early hours of Sunday, according to the police.

Two individuals suffered burn injuries, while the others experienced breathing problems due to excessive smoke, the police said.

According to the Delhi Fire Service, a fire call was received from the Jagbir Colony, Asola Village area in Fatehpur Beri, and three fire tenders were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

The Delhi Police’s preliminary investigation revealed that the fire originated on the ground floor due to a short circuit. The blaze also engulfed several vehicles and electric meters in the building’s stilt parking area.

A total of 10 electric meters, six motorcycles, and two scooters were destroyed in the fire, the police reported.

Neelam, a resident of the building, said, “I live on the first floor. The fire started around 3:00 to 3:30 am, but no one was aware of it as everyone was asleep. People outside the building were shouting about the fire. When we opened our balcony doors, we saw flames in our building. I was confused about how to escape, so I jumped from the first floor. The police rescued the other people through the roofs of adjacent buildings, while those who used the stairs were burned.”
