In an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court, the Delhi government has requested an additional water supply from the neighboring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for a period of one month. This plea comes in response to an escalating water crisis that threatens to affect the daily lives of millions of residents in the national capital.
The Delhi administration has highlighted the critical situation, emphasizing the immediate need for increased water resources to ensure the well-being of its citizens. Officials have pointed out that the current water supply is insufficient to meet the demands of the population, especially with the onset of peak summer months.
This request comes as several areas in Delhi, including Sanjay Camp in Chanakyapuri and Geeta Colony, face acute water shortages.
Residents in these affected areas are struggling to cope with the blazing heat, often waiting in long queues to fill even a single bucket of water. Water tankers, which are intended to provide relief, frequently fail to meet the needs of the large populations in these colonies, leaving many without adequate water.
The crisis coincides with soaring temperatures in Delhi, with maximum temperatures nearing the 50 degrees Celsius mark and minimum temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius, which is 2.8 degrees above normal. The meteorological department has warned that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in the coming days, advising residents to minimize exposure to the heat and stay hydrated. The Supreme Court is expected to deliberate on this request promptly.
