Justice Subramonium Prasad of the Delhi High Court has instructed the Counsel for the Delhi Government to furnish a fresh status report addressing the issue of cows and buffaloes congregating on the streets of the national capital. This directive came after consultations with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the BSES to determine further steps in this matter.
In an order dated October 16, Justice Prasad emphasized that mere filing of FIRs and correspondence with BSES and DJB will not resolve the problem. The Court expects concrete action from the respondents before the next hearing scheduled for December 7, 2023.
The High Court is overseeing a petition filed in 2022, which seeks directives to the Delhi Government and civic authorities for the removal of cattle gatherings on the roads. The petitioner, Satish Sharma has additionally called for ongoing monitoring by the concerned department to prevent the accumulation of cows and bulls on the road.
During the proceedings, it was noted that since the filing of the petition, several measures have been taken by the respondents to deter the presence of cows and buffaloes on the roads. It was further stated that FIRs have been lodged against individuals who have allowed their cattle to roam freely on the roads.
The respondent’s counsel informed the court that letters were dispatched to the Delhi Jal Board, requesting the discontinuation of water supply to illegal dairies, and similar letters were sent to BSES in January 2021, urging the disconnection of electricity to these unauthorized establishments.
