Doctor Jumps from Mumbai’s Atal Setu, Leaves Note for Father: Police

In a heart-wrenching incident marking the first of its kind on Mumbai’s newly constructed Atal Setu, a 43-year-old doctor, identified as Kinjal Kantilal Shah, plunged into the waters below, leaving behind a community in shock and sorrow.

The distressing episode unfolded on the sea bridge linking south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, where Shah, grappling with depression, made the fateful decision to end her life. Despite concerted efforts by authorities, her body remains undiscovered, leaving loved ones in anguish.

Authorities recovered a purported suicide note from Shah’s residence in Mumbai, shedding light on the torment she endured. The note addressed to her father, revealed her harrowing battle with depression spanning eight agonizing years, ultimately culminating in her tragic decision to take her own life.

Recounting the events leading up to the devastating incident, senior police inspector Rajendra Kote of the Nhava Sheva police station detailed Shah’s taxi ride to the Atal Setu on Monday afternoon. Despite the driver’s reluctance, Shah insisted on stopping the vehicle before leaping off the bridge, setting off a frantic search effort by authorities and local villagers.

Shah’s father, unaware of her intentions, was confronted with the chilling reality upon discovering her farewell message. He promptly reported the matter to authorities, triggering a meticulous investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The profound grief and disbelief rippling through the community serve as a stark reminder of the silent battles waged by those grappling with mental health challenges. Shah’s tragic demise underscores the urgent need for enhanced support systems and destigmatization efforts surrounding mental health issues.

As the search for Shah’s body continues, her untimely passing casts a pall over the city, prompting reflection on the importance of compassion, understanding, and vigilance in safeguarding the well-being of individuals battling mental health crises.
