External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Brunei’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato Haji Erywan, on Friday, on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings in Vientiane, Laos. During the meeting, they launched a logo celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Jaishankar expressed confidence that the warm and friendly ties between India and Brunei would continue to prosper. In a post on X, he wrote, “Very happy to meet Brunei FM Dato Haji Erywan today in Vientiane. Launched the logo celebrating 40 years of our diplomatic relations. Confident that our warm and friendly ties will prosper further.”
Earlier on Friday, at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Vientiane, Jaishankar emphasized that political, economic, and security cooperation with ASEAN is of utmost priority for India. He highlighted that ASEAN is central to India’s Act East policy and the Indo-Pacific vision, and noted the importance of expanding people-to-people linkages.
Jaishankar stated, “The priority that India attaches to ASEAN and AS platforms is evident from Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Jakarta last year, just before our own G20 summit. He announced a 12-point plan that has been largely acted upon.”
The ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with India, held in Vientiane, was attended by ASEAN Foreign Ministers, Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, and Dato’ Astanah Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for the ASEAN Political-Security Community. Timor-Leste participated as an observer.
The meeting reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to enhancing the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in the coming years. This includes the continued implementation of the ASEAN-India Plan of Action and its Annex, as well as developing a successor document to guide the CSP over the next five years. The Ministers also discussed several regional and international issues of mutual interest and concern.
