Election Commission Launches “Know Your Candidate” App Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the launch of a new mobile application called Know Your Candidate (KYC) during a press conference held in the national capital prior to announcing the dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The KYC app aims to empower voters by providing information about electoral candidates’ criminal antecedents.

Available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, the KYC app enables voters to ascertain whether candidates vying for representation in the Lok Sabha have any criminal background. Kumar emphasized the importance of voters having access to such information, stating that voters have the right to know about the criminal records, assets, and liabilities of candidates from their constituencies.

In addition to revealing candidates’ criminal histories, the app also provides details about their assets and liabilities. Kumar underscored the transparency measures, indicating that candidates with criminal records are obligated to disclose this information through newspapers and television advertisements three times.

Moreover, political parties fielding candidates with criminal backgrounds must justify their selection over other candidates. The app’s launch aligns with the Election Commission’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

The KYC app is now available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, with the Election Commission providing a QR code for easy access. Furthermore, the Election Commission announced that assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh will be held on May 13, while Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will conduct polling in a single phase on April 19. Additionally, by-polls for 26 Assembly seats will coincide with the Lok Sabha elections, demonstrating the comprehensive nature of the electoral process.
