Farmers Protest Intensifies At Shambhu Border: Shivraj Chouhan Assures Strong MSP Support

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday reiterated the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare, stating that the MSP is critical. He was speaking in the Rajya Sabha and assured farmers that efforts were underway to increase MSP rates and ensure crops are procured at these prices.

MSP is provided when crops are sold at rates lower than the MSP. I want to assure you that the welfare of farmers remains our priority. We have worked towards raising MSP and purchasing crops at MSP rates,” Chouhan declared, responding to questions on the matter.

Increased Budget Allocations For Farmers

Highlighting the Modi government’s agricultural achievements, Chouhan said there had been a significant boost in budgetary allocations for the farming sector over the past decade. “Under PM Modi’s leadership, there has been an unprecedented rise in the budget for agriculture and an increase in MSP for crops. The Modi government operates with foresight, focusing on enhancing farmers’ incomes,” he stated.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said he felt sure that Chouhan could connect with farmers. “Let me say, the Minister, who was once called the ‘Ladla’ (favourite) of the nation, will become the ‘Ladla’ of the farmers,” Dhankhar said, commenting on the session. He also opened a door for dialogue with protesting farmers.

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Bhagirath Choudhary, invited the protesting farmers for talks with an open door for dialogue, hinting at the government’s willingness to engage. “The doors are open for farmers to discuss their issues. I consider myself their brother. If they wish to come to us, they are welcome, or we will go to them for talks,” Choudhary said.

Protests Intensify At Shambhu Border

Despite the assurance from the government, tensions rose as farmers marching towards Delhi for the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest were stopped at the Shambhu border. Heavy police deployment was faced by the protestors demanding compensation and legal guarantee for MSP.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher reported injuries among protestors and revealed plans for a strategic meeting. “They (police) will not let us proceed to Delhi. Some farmer leaders have been injured. We will hold a meeting to decide our future strategy,” Pandher said.

The drone footage from the site revealed police barricades and over 100 farmers being stopped. The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, as they said they had been ordered to do so by BNSS, Section 163.
