‘Focus on what position countries take when they come’: Jaishankar on some leaders skipping G20 Summit

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of focusing on countries’ positions on key issues rather than dwelling on leaders skipping the G20 Summit. Speaking at the Doordarshan Dialogue, “G20: The India Way,” Jaishankar stressed that each G20 member would contribute to global politics in the upcoming meeting.

Jaishankar highlighted that every G20 member has a role to play in the upcoming meeting, emphasizing that they will all contribute to global politics in their own way. He dismissed concerns about the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that countries are represented by the individuals they choose for these roles. Therefore, the level of representation should not be the sole determinant of a country’s stance or contribution to the summit.

In Jaishankar’s view, the primary concern should be the positions countries adopt when they participate in the G20 Summit. He emphasized that these positions and the outcomes of the summit are what will ultimately matter. This perspective underscores the importance of the discussions, negotiations, and agreements that will take place among the participating nations.

Additionally, Jaishankar expressed confidence that all G20 member countries would approach the summit with seriousness, recognizing the critical role it plays in shaping global politics today. He implied that despite variations in the level of representation, each country is committed to making its unique contribution to addressing the significant global challenges discussed at the G20 Summit.

In summary, Jaishankar’s remarks centered on shifting the focus from the attendance of specific leaders to the positions and contributions of countries during the G20 Summit. He highlighted the importance of the outcomes and discussions that will occur, regardless of the level of representation. This perspective underscores India’s commitment to a constructive and productive G20 Summit.
