The situation in Manipur remains volatile as the intermittent firing continued at the general area of Kangvai-Awang Lekhai area in the Bishnupur district on Friday night.
Sources further said that a policeman was injured during the retaliatory firing incident. Firing has also been reported in the Laikote area of YKPI and the situation is being monitored by security forces. A mob of around 200 people gathered on Mahabali Road near the historic Kangla Fort in Manipur’s Imphal and torched two vehicles. There is no information about any casualty.
According to sources, the mob also tried to snatch weapons from the police. The police had to open fire to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control, sources said, though no casualties were reported in the incident. The sources further said that another mob of around 200 people had gathered at the Palace compound in Imphal West, but the Army and Rapid Action Force personnel managed to disperse it by 12.30 am today.
“The situation is tense in some parts with sporadic incidents of firing, but normal in most districts of Manipur,” an official Manipur police statement said on Thursday. “The situation is tense at some places due to sporadic incidents of firing and unruly mob gathering during the last 24 hours,” the statement said. However, the situation is normal in most of the districts.
The statement further said that the state police and central forces conducted search operations in sensitive and border areas in both hill and valley districts of the state on Thursday. On July 6, the Manipur Police and Central Security Forces (CSF) ) had destroyed 24 bunkers in the districts of Manipur.
