In a bid to tackle the growing menace of fake news and misinformation, the Union government has taken a significant step by formally notifying the Fact Check Unit (FCU) under the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) as the central fact-checking authority.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a Gazette notification, officially recognizing the PIB FCU in accordance with the provisions of sub-clause (v) of sub-rule (1) of rule 3 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of MIB and MeitY, the ministry emphasized the urgent need to address the proliferation of fake news, particularly on social media platforms.
The PIB Fact Check Unit, established in November 2019, aims to deter the creation and dissemination of false information by swiftly debunking misinformation. It serves as a platform for citizens to report suspicious content related to the Government of India, facilitating prompt corrective action.
Mandated to counter misinformation surrounding government policies, initiatives, and schemes, the FCU actively monitors, detects, and counters disinformation campaigns. Its primary objective is to ensure that inaccurate information concerning the government is promptly rectified and corrected.
To enhance accessibility, the Fact Check Unit can be reached through multiple channels, including WhatsApp, email, Twitter, and the PIB website. The WhatsApp Hotline Number offers a convenient tool for individuals to forward suspicious messages for verification.
Moreover, recognizing the importance of inclusivity, the PIB Fact Check Unit has taken steps to ensure that its fact-checks are accessible to persons with disabilities. This includes providing alternative text (ALT) alongside images shared on social media platforms, ensuring universal access to information.
As misinformation continues to pose a significant threat to public discourse and governance, the establishment of the PIB Fact Check Unit signifies a proactive approach by the government to uphold transparency and accuracy in communication with the public.
