The Indian government has unveiled a preliminary agenda for Parliament’s special session scheduled from September 18 to 22. The initial agenda includes two bills, The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023, slated for discussion in the Lok Sabha.
These bills had previously been approved in the Rajya Sabha on August 3.
Conversely, in the Rajya Sabha, deliberations will focus on The Post Office Bill, 2023, and The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, introduced on August 10.
Ahead of the special session, there was speculation regarding the government’s potential resolution to rename India as ‘Bharat’.
In addition to the formal parliamentary business, there will be a discussion on the theme “Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories, and Learnings,” as per the government’s notification.
The session is expected to witness the transition of parliamentary proceedings from the old Parliament building to the new one. An all-party meeting has been convened by the government on September 17, a day preceding the commencement of the special parliamentary session.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has confirmed the distribution of email invitations to all leaders of opposition parties for the meeting.
The announcement of the special session, taking place from September 18 to 22, was made by Pralhad Joshi on August 31.
Initially shrouded in secrecy, the session’s agenda is now becoming clearer, though subject to potential modifications. Officials have revealed that the session will commence in the old Parliament building and shift to the new structure the following day, coinciding with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 19, a day considered auspicious for new beginnings.
