Gujarat HC quashes CIC order directing varsity to ‘search for info’ on PM’s degrees, Kejriwal fined

The Gujarat High Court granted Gujarat University's petition and annulled and put aside a CIC decision for the institution to "search for information" regarding PM Modi's degrees.

The Gujarat High Court granted Gujarat University’s petition and annulled and put aside a Central Information Commission (CIC) decision for the institution to “search for information” regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees.

The court of Justice Biren Vaishnav also fined Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Rs 25,000 for requesting the information under the Right To Information (RTI) Act, and ordered him to deposit the money with the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority within four weeks.

Tushar Mehta, senior counsel and Solicitor General of India, appeared on behalf of the university.

The Gujarat High Court also refused to stay the order on Friday, despite a request from Kejriwal’s counsel, senior advocate Percy Kavina and advocate Aum Kotwal, and noted that the court had rejected Kejriwal’s counsel’s request to be heard on the aspects of costs imposed, which had not been heard during arguments.
