Himachal Pradesh is reeling under the impact of relentless heavy rains, which have triggered landslides and floods across the state, severely disrupting daily life. The State Emergency Operation Centre has reported that the torrential downpours have not only blocked 135 roads but have also interrupted water supply and electricity services, affecting a vast area.
According to the latest updates, 44 power supply schemes and 67 water supply schemes have been disrupted due to the extreme weather conditions. In response to the ongoing crisis, the Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange’ alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Saturday. The warning also includes a ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain, which is expected to continue until August 16.
The town of Nahan in the Sirmaur district has been hit the hardest, recording an astonishing 168.3 mm of rainfall since Friday evening. Other regions like Sandhole, which received 106.4 mm of rain, along with Nagrota Suriyan and Jubberhatti, have also experienced significant downpours. The Met department has raised concerns about the potential for low to moderate flash floods in isolated areas of Mandi, Sirmaur, Shimla, and Kullu districts, with the risk persisting until Sunday morning.
As the situation remains critical, authorities are taking precautionary measures to safeguard residents. Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh of Hamirpur district, where an orange alert has been issued, has urged people to stay away from rivers and streams and to avoid seeking shelter under trees during the inclement weather. This advisory is aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of the population amid the hazardous conditions.
The state has already witnessed a devastating impact from the monsoon rains, with over 100 lives lost due to rain-related incidents between June 27 and August 9. The financial toll has also been significant, with losses estimated at Rs 842 crores during this period. The government and local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, and rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas.
