IMD Issues Orange Alert for Multiple States As Heavy Rains Batter Parts of India

Heavy rain lashed parts of Gujarat on Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to predict continued rainfall until Tuesday. The IMD has issued an ‘orange rain alert’ for several states in central and northwestern India, indicating the potential for heavy rainfall and associated disruptions.

In Gujarat, the recent heavy downpours have caused significant disruption, leading to waterlogging and flood-like conditions in various areas. The intense rainfall follows a period of severe heat, bringing much-needed relief but also challenges for the state’s infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir also experienced heavy rainfall on Monday. The weather department forecasts that the rain will persist until August 2, offering respite from the heat but potentially leading to further disruptions.

The southwest monsoon has regained strength, bringing widespread rains to many regions of Kerala on Monday. This has resulted in isolated incidents of mudslides, uprooted trees, and significant damage from gusty winds, particularly in the high ranges of Kozhikode district. Early Monday morning saw strong winds uproot trees and damage several houses in the Thamarassery and Ambayathodu areas.

Orange Rain Alert for Multiple States

The IMD has issued an orange alert for various regions:

  • Rajasthan: July 31
  • Madhya Maharashtra: August 1 and 2
  • Coastal Karnataka: July 29 and 30
  • Kerala: July 29

Arunachal Pradesh is expected to be under an orange alert on August 1 and 2, with heavy rain forecast for parts of the state. An orange alert for heavy rain has also been issued for West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

Over the next five days, fairly widespread rain with light to moderate intensity, along with thunderstorms, is anticipated across West and Central India. Similar weather conditions are expected in the Northwestern region.
