Independence Day 2024: If You Are Living Near Delhi Metro Lines, You Might Have To Think Twice Before Flying Kites

Flying kites is a cherished tradition in Delhi-NCR, particularly around Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan. With the Delhi Metro operating nearly 400 kilometers of network across the region, much of it elevated, there is a significant risk due to the 25,000-volt live Over Head Equipment (OHE) wires that run alongside the tracks to power the trains.

As kite flying activity increases around August 15, there is a heightened chance of kite strings getting caught in the OHE wires or becoming entangled in the pantograph (the device that draws power from the OHE) of a moving train.

Such incidents can disrupt Metro services by damaging or tripping the OHE or pantograph and could also be life-threatening for those using metallic maanjha to fly kites.

To mitigate these risks, the DMRC has implemented a strong system to monitor and prevent disruptions. Dedicated teams are stationed near areas prone to kite flying to quickly remove any entangled kite strings. Additionally, train operators and station staff are instructed to be vigilant during this period.

The DMRC also urges the public to avoid flying kites near elevated Metro lines, particularly in residential areas, for their own safety. Contact with the high-voltage OHE can be fatal and may cause service disruptions by tripping the OHE or damaging the Metro trains.

For the safety of all Metro passengers and to ensure uninterrupted services, the DMRC advises the public to enjoy kite flying in open spaces far from Metro lines.
