Independence Day 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Record-Breaking Independence Day Speech Sets Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047

In his 11th consecutive address to the nation on the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered what is now his longest speech to date, clocking in at 97 minutes. This address not only broke his previous record of 96 minutes set during his 2016 speech but also reaffirmed his dedication to outlining the nation’s future trajectory. Modi’s shortest Independence Day speech, by contrast, was 55 minutes long, delivered in 2017.

The 97-minute address was notably focused on the theme of this year’s celebrations, “Viksit Bharat 2047,” a vision that aims to transform India into a fully developed nation by its centenary of independence. As part of this theme, Modi emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping the country’s future. “For Viksit Bharat 2047, we invited suggestions from the countrymen. The many suggestions we received reflect the dreams and aspirations of our citizens. When the people of the nation have such big dreams, it takes our self-confidence to newer heights and we become more resolute,” he stated, underscoring the collective ambition of the Indian populace.

In a speech that spanned a wide array of topics, Prime Minister Modi also addressed the pressing issue of women’s safety, particularly in the wake of a tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a Kolkata hospital. Modi’s comments on this matter were stern and clear: “The country, society, and state governments will have to take this seriously. Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest – this is important to instill confidence in society.” His remarks underscored the necessity for swift justice and the importance of protecting women, a concern that continues to resonate deeply within the nation.

Throughout his speech, Modi declared this period as a “golden era” for India, detailing plans for development across various sectors, economic reforms, and fostering hope for the nation’s youth. He touched on significant issues ranging from natural disaster management to the introduction of a uniform civil code, and the expansion of maternity leave for working women, highlighting his administration’s commitment to comprehensive national growth and societal welfare.

In a pointed moment, Modi took aim at his political opponents, criticizing those who he perceives as obstructing India’s progress for personal gain. “We are moving forward with resolution but there are some people who cannot see progress or think of India’s good unless it benefits them…The country needs to protect itself from this handful of pessimistic people,” he remarked, signaling his intent to continue his administration’s path forward despite opposition.
