India and Bangladesh to hold 53rd Director General Level Border Coordination Conference

The Border Security Force (BSF) of India and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are scheduled to convene the 53rd Director General Level Border Coordination Conference from June 11 to 14 in Delhi. The conference, organized by the BSF at BSF Camp Chhawla, will bring together delegations led by Sujoy Lal Thaosen, Director General of BSF, and Major General A K M Nazmul Hasan, BAM, ndc, psc, Director General of the Border Guard Bangladesh.

The primary objective of this conference is to discuss border-related issues and enhance coordination between the two border guarding forces. The previous BSF-BGB Coordination Conference was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from July 17 to 21, as stated by a tweet from the BSF.

Key topics of discussion during the conference will include collaborative efforts to combat trans-border crimes, the timely sharing of information between the Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh, as well as developmental and infrastructural projects. Additionally, the conference will focus on the effective implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs).

The Joint India-Bangladesh guidelines for Border Authorities, established in 1975, emphasize the importance of frequent contact between the border authorities of both countries to address immediate administrative concerns, according to a tweet from the BSF. The first meeting between the former Director General of BSF, Ashwani Kumar, and the former Director General of BDR (now BGB), Major General Quazi Golam Dastgir, took place in Kolkata in December 1975 to discuss mutual border issues.

Since then, the DG BSF and DG BGB meetings have been held annually, alternating between India and Bangladesh, until 1993. Following discussions in Dhaka from October 7 to 9, 1993, the Home Secretaries of both countries agreed to make the Director General level meetings a bi-annual event.

The BSF’s tweet further emphasized the importance of close contacts and meaningful dialogue at various levels to progressively resolve issues of mutual interest and concern. As per the agreed summary of discussions, the DG BSF and DG BGB have been holding Border Coordination meetings twice a year, alternating between Delhi and Dhaka, with joint records of these meetings forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs after each session.
