India G20: Third Development Working Group meeting begins in Goa

On Monday, the third Development Working Group (DWG) meeting opened with an interesting and informative side session on women-led development, one of India’s core G20 target areas.

The third G20 Development Working Group (DWG) summit will be held in Goa, India, from May 8 to 11, 2023. The summit will be attended by about 80 participants from G20 members, 9 invitee nations, and numerous international and regional organisations. The event was organised by the G20 Secretariat in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

In his welcoming remarks, Ministry of External Affairs Joint Secretary Nagaraj Naidu emphasised the importance of fostering generational equality, saying that we must unlock women’s full potential through a women-led development strategy.

He emphasised that women’s equal participation in markets, access to and control over productive resources, access to decent work, control over their own time, lives, and bodies, and increased voice, agency, and meaningful participation in economic decision-making not only boosts productivity and economic growth, but is also necessary for peaceful societies, full human potential, and sustainable development.

The event started with a session on “Women and Economy: Emerging Sectors and the Future of Work”, followed by a spotlight session on “Women’s Leadership in the Uniformed Services”, and another on “Agents of Change: Climate Resilience and Food Systems”.

All panellists called on the G20 Development Working Group to work towards an actionable outcome that will contribute to generational equality and unleash women’s full potential through a women-led development approach that calls for women’s full, equal, effective, and meaningful participation as decision-makers for addressing global challenges effectively, decisively, and inclusively.
