This demonstrates a notable jump of 14 ranks on the GII 2022 compared to the previous year.
Over the past decade, India has consistently improved its GII ranking, progressing from 127th in 2014 to 108th in 2022, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance gender equality.
These advancements are attributed to the government’s committed agenda for women’s empowerment, encompassing various policy initiatives aimed at their holistic socio-economic and political advancement.
These initiatives encompass education, skill development, entrepreneurship support, workplace safety, and other key areas, aligning with the government’s overarching goal of fostering ‘women-led development’.
In 2022, India witnessed advancements in all Human Development Index (HDI) indicators, including life expectancy, education, and Gross National Income (GNI) per capita. Life expectancy increased from 67.2 to 67.7 years, expected years of schooling reached 12.6, mean years of schooling rose to 6.57, and GNI per capita saw a rise from $6,542 to $6,951.
Additionally, India showed improvement in mitigating gender inequality, with a GII value of 0.437, surpassing global and South Asian averages.
