While discussing international concerns on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden supported Ukraine’s “territorial integrity” and “condemned North Korea’s ballistic missile launches.”
In a joint statement issued after Prime Minister Modi met with US President Joe Biden on his first-ever State visit to Washington, the two leaders called for “respect for international law, principles of the UN charter and territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
“As global partners, the United States and India affirm that the rules-based international order must be respected. They emphasized that the contemporary global order has been built on principles of the UN Charter, international law, and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of states,” the joint statement read.

President Biden and Prime Minister Modi also expressed their serious concern over the turmoil in Ukraine and “mourned its terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences,” in the joint statement. The serious and growing impact of the conflict on the world economy, notably on the security of food, fuel, and energy, as well as crucial supply networks, were also emphasised by PM Modi and Vice President Biden. They demanded that more be done to lessen the effects of the conflict, particularly in developing countries.
Furthermore, both nations promise to keep providing ongoing humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people. According to the joint statement, they demanded “respect for international law, principles of the UN charter, and territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
North Korea ballistic missile launch was condemned by both leaders
The destabilising ballistic missile launches by North Korea, which violate pertinent UN Security Council resolutions and constitute a serious danger to global peace and security, were also denounced by the leaders. They reiterated their support for the total denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and encouraged North Korea to honour its commitments to do so and take part in meaningful negotiations.

Both countries also agreed upon the significance of post-conflict reconstruction in Ukraine. President Biden and Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to an Indo-Pacific region that is free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous while upholding state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law.
Both leaders expressed concern about coercive measures and increasing hostilities in the joint statement, and strongly opposed the destabilising or unilateral measures that aim to change the status quo by violence.
In addressing challenges to the maritime rules-based order, including in the East and South China Seas, both sides emphasised the importance of adherence to international law, particularly as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the maintenance of freedom of navigation and overflight.
