India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is going to Bangladesh on December 9, 2024, to attend the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), as the rising attacks on Hindus and other minorities in the neighboring country have increased concern. This visit is an important part of the structured diplomatic engagement between the two countries, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss pressing issues, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
During his visit, Foreign Secretary Misri will hold high-level discussions with Bangladesh’s foreign ministry officials, including his counterpart. He will discuss a number of issues, including regional security, trade, and cooperation on shared challenges.
Regarding the upcoming visit, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that it is an important step in taking forward the dialogue between the two countries. “Foreign Office Consultations led by the Foreign Secretary are a structured engagement between our two countries. We look forward to this meeting,” Jaiswal said at a press briefing.
The Foreign Office Consultations would be an important forum for India and Bangladesh to discuss the scope for further cooperation. Issues such as border security, economic partnerships, and regional development are likely to be discussed during the talks.
Besides, the MEA talked about India’s position on legal issues in Bangladesh, especially where violence against minorities is reported. “We expect that the relevant legal processes of Bangladesh will be carried out in a manner that adequately respects the legal rights of all parties concerned,” Jaiswal said, stressing equality and justice.
The visit comes at a very crucial juncture with attacks on Hindus and minorities gaining international attention. Thus, the diplomatic engagement of India, with the commitment to strengthen the ties with its neighbor but demanding the protection of the rights of minorities, highlights an essential aspect of it.
