Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday speaks on the ongoing situation Hamas war and said she was “shocked and ashamed” that India has abstained in the United National General Assembly (UNGA) on a resolution that called for a humanitarian truce in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Priyanka Gandhi quoted Mahatma Gandhi’s wisdom, stating that “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind” and emphasized that the nation’s refusal to take a stance contradicts its historical values.
Expressing her dismay, she remarked, “I find myself both shocked and deeply disappointed by India’s decision to abstain from voting for a Gaza ceasefire. Our nation’s foundation rests on the bedrock of non-violence and truth, values for which our freedom fighters sacrificed their lives. These principles serve as the cornerstone of our constitution, defining our national identity. They embody the moral strength of India, guiding our actions as a responsible member of the global community.” She further said, “To refuse to take a stand and watch in silence as every law of humanity is pulverised, food, water, medical supplies, communication and power is cut off to millions of people and thousands of men, women and children in Palestine are being annihilated goes against everything our country has stood for throughout its life as a nation.” India, during a United Nations vote, abstained from endorsing a resolution proposed by Jordan that called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. In response to this resolution, Canada put forward an amendment, which sought to add a condemnation of the terror organization Hamas and promote unhindered humanitarian access in the Gaza Strip. India supported Canada’s proposed amendment, along with 87 other nations. However, this amendment could not be adopted because it did not secure the required two-thirds majority vote.
