President Droupadi Murmu graced the India Smart Cities Conclave 2023, held in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district on Wednesday. During her address at the event, President Murmu emphasized the need to prepare for a future where over 50 percent of India’s population would reside in urban areas by 2047. She also highlighted the expected contribution of cities to the GDP, projected to exceed 80 percent by that time.
In her remarks, President Murmu underscored the significance of addressing climate change as an integral aspect of sustainable development discussions. She cited the Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework, designed for India’s 100 smart cities, as a noteworthy example of how cities can combat climate change at the national level. The President stressed the importance of green building practices and renewable energy to enhance energy efficiency within urban areas while urging a broader and more comprehensive approach in these domains.
She stated, “Our objectives must align with the Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 11 aims to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements. This goal emphasizes holistic and inclusive urban development.”
Furthermore, President Murmu called attention to the vital role of effective city management in advancing sustainable development goals. She advocated for learning from the best practices and business models of well-managed cities worldwide and sharing successful endeavours with other nations. The President emphasized that collaboration, both locally and globally, is essential for comprehensive and sustainable development.
President Murmu stressed the need to develop safe, clean, and healthy neighbourhoods across the nation, urging citizens to take responsibility for their cities and residents. She also highlighted the importance of proactive public participation and the cooperation of relevant departments to combat diseases like dengue and malaria in urban areas.
The President emphasized the necessity of extending healthcare services, educational institutions, and basic amenities to rural areas, aiming to alleviate pressure on urban infrastructure and enhance the living conditions of rural communities.
Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan warmly received President Droupadi Murmu at Indore airport and extended a warm welcome to her in the city. Chief Minister Chouhan expressed his pride in the President’s visit, stating, “Heartily welcomed the President of India Droupadi Murmu at Indore Airport. Your presence in the city is a matter of pride for us.”
