In a tragic incident near Battery Chashma in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir, ten bodies have been recovered a day after a taxi veered off the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway into a deep gorge. The recovery operation is ongoing, with authorities working tirelessly to identify the victims.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban, Anuj Kumar, the taxi plunged approximately 300-350 meters into the gorge due to slippery road conditions caused by rain. The accident occurred in the early hours of Friday, leading to a swift response from rescue teams, including the Army and mountain rescue personnel.
“The vehicle accidentally slipped and fell into a 300-350 metre-deep gorge. We have been recovering the bodies since 2 am. Ten bodies have been recovered. The identification of the bodies is in process,” SSP Anuj Kumar stated.
The victims are primarily non-locals, with some hailing from Jammu and Kashmir. The vehicle was en route from Jammu to Srinagar when the tragedy struck.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha issued instructions for providing all necessary assistance to the families of the victims. The State Disaster Response Force from the Union Territory is also actively involved in the response efforts.
The recovery operation continues as authorities work to ascertain the full extent of the tragedy and provide support to those affected by this devastating accident.
