Counting of Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll begins

The counting of ballots for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat (formerly known as Jullundur) began at 8 a.m. on Saturday, according to authorities.

Security has been strengthened in and around the counting facilities established at the Director Land Records and Sports College Complex on Kapurthala Road. The elections were held on Wednesday, with a voter participation of 54.70 percent.

Paramilitary troops and the Punjab Police have been deployed here to prevent any disruption during the voting process.

The byelection for Jalandhar Lok Sabha, one of Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha districts, was called when incumbent Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary died on January 14 of this year after suffering a heart collapse while participating in the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.

According to authorities, all EVMs and VVPAT machines were held in the’strong room’ after the polling, and three layers of protection were erected.
