Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India, following a recommendation from the current Chief Justice, DY Chandrachud. He will take the oath of office on November 11, 2024, and his tenure will conclude on May 13, 2025.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment via social media platform X, stating, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024.”

Justice Khanna, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, has an extensive legal career that began in 1983 when he became an advocate. Initially practicing in the district courts at the Tis Hazari complex, he later honed his skills in the High Court of Delhi and various tribunals. His experience includes serving as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi in 2004. His versatility is further showcased by his roles as an Additional Public Prosecutor and an amicus curiae in criminal cases at the Delhi High Court.
He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a permanent judge the following year. His elevation to the Supreme Court came on January 18, 2019, marking a significant milestone in his judicial career.
Justice Khanna’s appointment comes at a time when the judiciary faces numerous challenges, including the backlog of cases and the need for reforms. His tenure will be closely watched as he leads the Supreme Court during this critical period.
