As the annual Kanwar Yatra progresses, Delhi-NCR traffic authorities have enacted extensive measures to facilitate the safe journey of pilgrims returning from Haridwar. These efforts have necessitated significant alterations to traffic routes, particularly affecting key areas in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Noida, Delhi, and Faridabad, which are experiencing heightened congestion.
Traffic Restrictions in Noida:
- Lane Closures: From July 28 to August 4, the Noida traffic police have restricted two out of four lanes between Okhla Barrage and Okhla Bird Sanctuary. This measure ensures a safe passage for Kanwar Yatra pilgrims.
- Affected Route: A four-kilometer stretch, spanning from Mayur Vihar through Shani Temple and Okhla Bird Sanctuary to Kalindi Kunj, falls under Noida’s jurisdiction. This area is particularly congested due to the pilgrimage.
- Traffic Diversions: Barriers set up near Sector 126 police station at Kalindi Kunj divert traffic onto the two right lanes from the Delhi to Noida side, causing significant bottlenecks.
- Increased Personnel: Additional traffic police officers have been deployed near Okhla Barrage to manage the flow, especially during peak hours when the route narrows, preventing further congestion.
Uttar Pradesh Police Measures:
- Expressway Closures: The Delhi-Meerut Expressway is closed to heavy vehicles, with diversions in place until 8 pm on August 5. Restrictions extend to all vehicles between Delhi and Meerut, including private cars, from July 29.
Delhi Government Support:
- Accommodation Camps: Delhi minister Atishi announced the establishment of large camps at Kashmiri Gate, capable of accommodating at least 2,000 Kanwariyas. Waterproof tents, beds, and tables have been provided to account for the high chance of rain.
- Medical and Food Facilities: The camps are equipped with food provisions and medical assistance. A doctor and medical team are available around the clock, working in three shifts. An ambulance is stationed outside the camp for emergencies, ready to transport serious cases to LNGP Hospital.
Devotees at Shiv Temples:
- Significance of Sawan: The month of Sawan, significant for Hindus and dedicated to Lord Shiva, sees a surge in worship, fasting, and pilgrimages. Devotees carrying gangajal are visiting prominent temples like Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain, Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, Kali Paltan in Meerut, and Jharkhandi Mahadev in Gorakhpur.
- Timeline: According to Drik Panchang, Sawan began on July 22 and will conclude on August 19 this year.
